Plentiful Persimmons

We are very lucky to have a forty year old persimmon tree in our garden.

It is huge and we receive an anbundant harvest every year.

This year we have been taking them to my children’s school and leaving them in a big basket for people to take.

The common questions are, when do you know when they are ready and how do you eat them?

Answer 1: We have a large astringent variety and what we do is harvest them when they are hard with a yellow/orange colour. We then place them in a covered box with an apple.

Sometimes they take up to two weeks to ripen and they do not all ripen at the same rate, thank goodness.

When they are extremely orange and incredibly soft, they are ready.

Answer 2: Cut off the top and stick a spoon in!

What do you do with your persimmons?

Something for the weekend…….

If you do not have any plans for the weekend, how about planting your own green smoothie garden!

Planting a green smoothie garden is so easy and a great way to begin a love of gardening.

They are easy to grow and will allow you to harvest some crop in a just a few weeks and you will be able to keep on harvesting for months.

Here are my top three green garden crops, they will help you create a thriving green supermarket right outside your back door!

Silverbeet/Swiss Chard

Silverbeet is very easy to grow and there are beautiful varieties such as ruby and rainbow chard. Whether you choose seeds or seedlings keep up the water, watch out for the snails and you can be harvesting from when they are anything from 10 cm high.

Parsley

Parsley, especially Italian is one of my favourite herbs and so easy to grow. I beleive you can never have too much parsley, so at the end of the season make sure that you let it go to seed and you could be harvesting parsley for years after only planting it once.

Kale

Super food kale looks beautiful in the garden, my favourite is Russian Red. White cabbage moths also love kale so if you see them fluttering around, check underneath the leaves. Any tiny white/yellow raised bumps are the eggs, and they will hatch into rampant caterpillars, but you can wipe them off with your fingers.

These three greens love being planted together, they look great side by side, but also to plant diffent crops together can confuse the pests, which is less work for you.

Young children love to garden so get them involved with growing greens and their knowledge of real food is already planted.

Happy planting, happy harvesting and then of course, happy blending!

Get prepared!

Here in Melbourne the seasons have changed and many people are getting sick as can happen at this time of year.

We may not be able to avoid every single bug that comes our way, but we can lessen the impact and duration by being prepared and filling our bodies up with foods that nourish us, heal us and build up our immune systems.

Note: Many people that eat a large amount of raw foods (including myself) do report never getting sick and if they do it is a lesser form or shorter duration that those that are not consuming raw foods. Food for thought.

There are many ways to prepare our bodies for Winter but one of my favourite ways is regular consumption of live vitamin C and greens, greens, greens!

Prevention Medicine

So with that in mind, I wanted to share an Autumn themed green smoothie recipe with you.

Apple Pie smoothie

2 apples ( golden delicious are good as they are softer and give a smoother texture)

2 Handfuls spinach or silverbeet

1/2  avocado

1/2 lemon

2-3 cups water

1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg or cinnamon

Happy blending!

Medicine in a bottle has never tasted this good.

Choc Chip Orange Truffles

I have an apologie to make.

A couple of weeks ago I promised the recipe for the choc chip orange truffles I made for a huge event.

With the preparations for The Raw Beauty Retreat, ( more on that next week) I forgot to do this post.

So, with no further delay, here is the recipe. I hope you feel it was worth the wait!

Luxury treats

Choc Chip Orange Truffles

(makes 15-20)

1 cup raw almonds

1/2 – 3/4 cup medjool dates, pitted (how many dates depends on how sweet you like your sweets)

1/2 cup cacao powder (with extra for dusting)

2 tablespoons coconut butter/oil, melted

2 tablespoons cacao nibs

Zest of 1 orange

Splash of vanilla extract

Pinch of sea salt

Blend all the ingredients, (except the cacao nibs) in a food processor until well combined. You do not want any lumpy nut bits left, you are aiming for a smooth mix.

Add the nibs and combine for a few seconds in the processor.

Roll into small balls and then roll in the extra cacao powder.

Store in the fridge. They will keep for 2 weeks, if you do not eat them all from the food processor.

If you want to you can use orange essential oil instead of the zest, which will give them a longer shelf life.

These are great Christmas presents and there is nothing like receiving a handmade gift that also involves chocolate! x

After you have made yours, why not post a pic on my FB page? facebook.com/kemisrawkitchen

Please leave any comments below, after you have washed your sticky chocolate fingers of course.

Look out!

There are always new healthy treats coming onto the market and it is a great thing. But, we have to be aware that although something has been marketed as healthy, it is only when we read the ingredients list or about the ingrdeints, that we know if we are being as nourished as we think we are.

How is this for a description of ingredients:

All of our organic superfood snackpacks have been crafted to synergistically bring together the highest quality raw organic ingredients from Australia and around the world, into an exquisitely delicious whole that captivates the taste buds, enriches the body and inspires the soul.

This is the statement from Manuko a wonderful new Melbourne raw food business.

I am sharing them with you because the food tastes great, but as I am also friends with the owners, I know the work, love, integrity, ethical creation and commitment that has gone into creating these little bags of wonder called Snackpacks.

At Manuko our mission is to provide a gateway into a healthy, sustainable and vibrant way of life that nurtures and inspires the human spirit.

They have just released these wonders onto the market and already demand is high.

Perfect to just have in your bag and pick out when you want a ball of nourishment.

My favourite flavours are the Sour cherry cashew with cacao nibs, and the sweet orange almond choc with chia seeds, but I couldn’t turn turn down a choc mint walnut with spirulina either!

Not avaliable everywhere, but they are in the best organic shops in Melbourne. If you do not live in the official most livable city in the world (;P) hop onto the website to see when they are coming your way www.manuko.com.au

Try a Manuko Snackpack ( in fact you should probably try all 3 flavours, it’s only fair) and let me know your favourite.

The winner is…….

Today is prize giving day!

Thank you for all the responses to win, Girl on Raw’s eBook, ‘Traveling in the raw’.

The winner is………Trish. Congratulations!

I wanted to share her answer with you and some of the other responses, to show you what different people do to ‘add more raw’ while travelling and hopefully inspire your own raw rituals while away from home.

Take it away Trish.

“It is important for me to add more raw while I am travelling because I spent most of my days on tour at Festivals in Australia and the UK. I do this by keeping some sprouts on the go in my sprouting kit and by travelling with my Lurch Spiralizer. I have both in each country so no need to pack on the flight. They require no power and means that I can easily make a courgette spaghetti with a handle of sprouts on top. Yum. Truly healthy fast food on the go.”

“Also I dehydrate loads of raw bars before I leave home and I also make a sprouted buck wheat bread which tends to last for about a month when kept in the fridge. I am lucky as I have a fridge in both live in vehicles in Australia and the UK so it keeps well. These are both very filling and compact and travel well. Healthy Fast food on the go.”

“I always bring a personal blender! Starting with a fresh green smoothie in the morning keeps me grounded while travelling. It is an easy way to add more greens and alkalizing foods to help with the stress and unpredictability travelling can cause. It is easy to get ice from your hotel and find some fresh fruits and vegetables. Raw veggies are also a great snack for the plane and will help keep you hydrated! Apples, apples, apples. My favorite travel snack. It is such an easy transportable snack, pare it with some raw almonds or walnuts.” Katelyn

“I just spent a year travelling the world on a predominately raw diet. First stop for me was always the local markets to learn  what was in season and stock up on fruits and veg. A good knife is an essential travelling companion so you can eat on the go. I left oz with Vital Greens, chia seeds, bee pollen, spirulina etc but when they ran out I revelled in discovering local health food stores to replenish my supplies and find local superfood treasures. A good shaker bottle for making on the go smoothies with above mentiones supplements, filtered water and fruit etc and I was fueled up and ready to take on the sights!!” Amber

Next weeks blog will feature the new class dates for Summer/Autumn 2013!

So if you really want to ‘get your raw’ on in 2013, look out for next weeks blog post and book early.
